Stopping Pest Birds from Damaging Your Signs
Stopping Pest Birds from Damaging Your Signs
Customers are not the only ones attracted to signs. Often birds target signs for a variety of reasons such as observing food opportunities, warming themselves in the sun or providing a warm and protected nesting spot.
As birds target the signs, their droppings and nesting materials can cause a host of problems. Not only do the bird droppings make a mess of the sign, creating an unsightly look and negative company image for customers, but because the droppings are acidic over time they can erode plastic, glass, steel and other signs causing significant permanent damage to the sign. Bird droppings that fall to the ground below the sign need regular clean up or they can create a slip and fall hazard for anyone walking underneath the sign which is a huge liability for the company. Finally, nesting materials can create fire hazards in electrical equipment or even heated light bulbs within the sign.
There are a few different options
of bird control products for use on signs. Choosing the right one depends on which
bird species you have a problem with and what the birds are doing there. Also, be sure to fully clean and disinfect
the sign before installing the bird control product.
For larger pest birds like pigeons, crows or gulls that are loafing or roosting
on signs there are a few options that work well to repel the birds. Bird
Spikes are a great option to deter
larger birds on signs. The spikes are
blunt tipped and humane, but they prevent larger birds from landing when
installed appropriately. Bird Spikes can
also be glued or screwed to protect curved signage as the base is very flexible
and can bend to contour along letters if needed. If the birds are nesting or there is a heavy
food presence, you may want to level up a notch and install Bird-Shock
Flex Track to protect your sign
instead. Bird Shock protects your
signage from any sized bird landing where it is installed as it gives the
equivalent of a static electric shock to the bird when it touches the track,
driving the pest birds away.
For smaller birds, and especially in situations where nesting is occurring,
completely denying access to the sign by installing Bird Net around it is a great choice. Use ¾ inch netting so that you can keep out
even the smallest birds like sparrows and finches. While the birds will be completely denied
access, there is always the option with Bird Net to install strategically
placed zippers to allow access for maintenance like changing light bulbs.
Finally, Bird Free
Optical Bird Repellent Gel comes in pre-loaded
dishes that can be set on top of the sign. Because of the way birds see things
in the ultraviolet light range, the gel creates the illusion of a wall of
flames plus it has a smell that is unpleasant to most bird species which drives
the pest birds away.
