Simple Solutions to Stop Birds from Flying Into Windows
Seeing a bird flying into a window is a
terrible thing to witness. Once you’ve made sure the bird is okay, the you need
to take steps to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
The most common reason birds fly into windows is that they don’t see the glass
they are hitting or understand what it is. Birds have fantastic eyesight, but
they don’t recognize that the glass is a solid object it can’t pass
through. In some cases there may also be
something they are attracted to inside the building such as food or water that
they can see they are trying to reach.
To prevent birds from hitting your windows there are some visual deterrents that can be installed that will help the bird recognize that the glass is something that will obstruct their flight path and it signals to them to stop and avoid the obstruction.
Bird Alert window decals help prevent birds from striking windows. Each decal has a special coating that reflects ultraviolet sunlight. This ultraviolet light is invisible to humans, but birds see it as a brilliant glow much like a stoplight. To the human eye, the decals appear as frosted or etched glass. Bird Alert decals are designed to be placed on the OUTSIDE of a window and use static cling to adhere to the window so they are easily removed and moveable.
Another visual deterrent that can help signal to the birds that they need to veer away from the window is Holographic Flash Tape. This easy to install bird deterrent is designed to reflect light, wave in the wind and makes noise as the wind moves it to scare the birds from the area. The flashing reflections and movement of the Holographic Flash Tape triggers their instinct to flee because they believe a predator is near. Cut strips as long as the window so the entire area is protected.
Sometimes birds peck at windows because the birds see their reflection thinking it is another bird in its territory. You will notice these birds fluttering, bouncing around, and aggressively attacking the reflection in the window. Blocking their reflection is the best way to resolve this and there are a few ways to do this.
The Holographic Flash tape can help scare away birds and block their view of the window. Make sure to cut strips of flash tape long enough to extend to the bottom of the windowsill. The more aggressive the birds, the closer you will want to space the Flat Tape strips. The goal is to block the reflection of the bird and if possible, stop them from perching on the ledge.
There is a new visual deterrent that is showing good effectiveness in deterring birds. Bird Free Optical Gel is a new type of bird gel that comes ready to deploy in small dishes that can be placed along the windowsill. Bird Free Optical Bird Gel creates the illusion of flames in the ultraviolet light zone which birds can see. As sparrows approach the window the “flames” rise from the Bird Free Gel dishes so their flight path and landing pattern are altered as they believe they are being confronted by a wall of fire. In addition, the gel has an odor that sparrows find unpleasant and if they overcome their fear of ‘fire’ and step anywhere near the gel dish they will find that sticky, unpleasant sensation as well. Bird Free bird deterrent gel is an herbal oil-based gel and is not affected by temperature extremes, rain or snow. This allows it to be used to deter birds in any weather situation. The design also creates its own film which helps prevent evaporation.
If you have a particularly aggressive bird attacking its reflection, we recommend pairing the Holographic Flash Tape and Bird Free Optical Gel dishes together. This combination will help block the reflection they see and prevent them from landing on the ledge to perch.
